“It is our goal at Bloom Bras to design products which are easily adjustable for every activity and are always comfortable to wear. I want to empower women to get out there.”
Fitness and exercise is no longer just a recommendation – it should be a core component in every woman’s life. But many women find themselves on the sidelines, not because they don’t want to exercise, but because they can’t — Women’s Health Mag reported that one in three women experience breast pain when working out and feel they have no other choice than to opt out.
It is our goal at Bloom Bras to design products which are easily adjustable for every activity and are always comfortable to wear. It moves with you through normal weight gain and loss throughout your cycle. I want to empower women no matter what their shape, size or age to feel good while moving.
Message from the Founder
I founded Bloom Bras out of frustration after not being able to find a sports bra that worked for me. The original business plan was written in 1999 but it took me 15 years to build up the courage. When I ran my first half marathon, I had no skin left from chafing. It was then that I started to do the research and learned how frustrated so many women were. It was then that I set out to solve the problem. It is not a design flaw but an engineering challenge.
I partnered with NASA, shipping and packaging experts and celebrity corset designer Camilla Huey — couturier to Oprah Winfrey, Adele, Cate Blanchett and Katy Perry — to develop the first sports bra to combine a lifting strap and cinching cup that wearers can adjust to their body and level of activity, from yoga to track. Designed without harmful underwire or velcro, it works like a shelf to lift the breasts rather than squashing them, distributing weight throughout the back and sides rather than putting pressure over the shoulders and across the ribs. This allows for natural movement of the breast and uninterrupted circulation of the body’s essential systems, contributing to improved posture and physique.
I lead a very active lifestyle but for me the main challenge was finding a sports bra that gave me enough support yet didn’t make me feel like I was wearing a suit of armor or a medieval torture device. I come from a background of marketing as well as fitness instruction was frustrated with the selection of sports bras for well-endowed women. “The average breast size has risen from a 34B to a 34DD in the past 10 years, yet sports bras only cater up to a D cup. So the rest of us are basically squeezed out of space – pun intended!”
I named my company after my grandma who gave me several things that make who I am – a love of travel and food as well as my big boobs. I lost her to breast cancer and became very involved in the community. The Bloom Bra is designed specifically to work with those women who have had non-elective reconstructive surgery. Plus, we donate bras to women who are getting back on their feet.
